How do we define HEROS?
HERO QUALITIES WE ADMIRE:
Achievement - extraordinary results, from hard work
Compassion - sympathy with a desire to alleviate suffering and remove its cause, more than empathy, like altruism
Courage - taking an unpopular position, standing up for principle, persevering, forging accomplishment out of adversity
Discipline - proper conduct or action, the training effect of experienceIntegrity - sound character, honesty, virtue, honor, sincerity
Intuition - direct perception of truth, keen insight, like decision-makingLeadership - causing good things to happen, being earnest
Responsibility - reliable, dependable, accountable
Self-expression - individualism and originality
Teamwork - cooperative effort, common cause
HERO SYNONYMS TO THINK ABOUT:
Role model - plainer than hero, more human, the moral component referred to by Oxford English Dictionary as "greatness of soul"
Mentor - teacher, advisor, wise and trusted for one's care and education
Unsung/Everyday/Local Hero - a decent person who sacrifices or tries to make a positive difference in his or her community. More inclusive and democratic than just hero.
Leader - frequently linked but too broad: Hitler was a leader.
Legend, icon, idol - celebrity and fame, but not heroic per se.
Warrior - synonymous for most of human history, but not any more.
The world's made up of individuals who don't want to be heroes.-
